Our first week in Kigali was predominantely coloured by connecting people and preparing the following week’s work. That work contained the mapping of the schoolground, doing some paper tests with the children, having contacts with local contacts and preparing the installations on the school’s XO laptops. Talks to the local OLPC organization and the Ministry of Education gave us some directions for the upcoming tests of our activity. We settled in the local ESRI office and tried to see get to know parts of this fast developing city.
Here are some impressions of Kigali:
Not to forget the Kagugu Primary School where the tests will take place:
After the installations some teachers could try the activity and we had a lot of fun with the children.
While installing our activity on the school’s laptops we have found some „very special“ activities…
The next step in the preperation for next week test was a mapping of the school ground, to provide a base map for the geoactivity. The school ground of the Kagugu Primary School is quite big with a lot of buildings and nice places. Theodore helped us with the mapping and we’ve got through quuickly and had some chat with the teachers and children.

During our work in Kigali, we are mapping openstreetmap data. Not only for the school where we performing our tests, but also other parts of Kigali city. Theodore for example was excited collecting data in his sector and enjoyed to create his very first map on OSM. Have a look on PRE and POST:

Hey out there,
took a long time since I posted the last progress step. We did some tests again in Bodelschwinghschule and refined collaboration functionality for the Geo activity.
We created some screenstories which tell you more about the workflow for each plugin we can provide for now (Geocaching and Geotagging). This is the first screenstory telling about the Geocaching, a later blog article will give you information about Geotagging.
First startup the Geo game and choose the Geocaching activity.
Start the Geo activity
Choose plugin (within Geo a plugin represents the actual activity)
Hide treasure somewhere
Share the activity
Two players join activity
