Campinas, Brazil: Spatial ability tests at Padre Emilio Miotti school

After holding the workshop in Sao Jose dos Campos, the team from the Institute for Geoinformatics, Münster headed to Campinas to perform a series of tests on spatial ability of children at the school „Padre Emilio Miotti“ in Campinas. These tests and activities were made in cooperation and with the support of the NIED, an institute of UNICAMP. We would like them to thank them for help and support.
The tests conducted there followed the same pattern as the tests performed in Kigali, Rwanda last year and at St. Mauritz school in Muenster. First a pre-test to assess the spatial abilities was performed by the children, then they used the Geo-Activity (developed by Henning) on OLPC´s XO laptops. The main goal of this activity is to foster the spatial learning of kids. This was then verified by a second round of post-tests with the kids. The results of this testing will be incorporated into Thomas Ph.D. Thesis.
The activity is now deployed onto a significant number of XO-laptops at this school, and at the end of June, Philippe Rieffel will participate in an event to teach the teachers how to use this software in the future. To ensure the future use and to thank the school and NIED for their support, the GL@PS left 6 GPS-receivers at the school, which are necessary to use the software, since the XO 1.5 does not have a build in GPS chip.
Philippe will stay with NIED for some more time to work on the software deployment as well as to do research for his upcoming Master´s Thesis (more on this will be posted soon).

GL@PS presented at workshop in Brasil

From 25.04.2011 to 29.04.2011, the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais, (INPE) (Brazil) and the Institut for Geoinformatics (ifgi) (Germany) of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster held a one week workshop in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brasil. This event was organised in the context of the German-Brasilian Year of Science, Technology and Innovation. Researchers of the GI@School initiative of Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster got in touch with scientists from Brazil, all of very different professions, to present work, exchange ideas and discuss future cooperation. This workshop was divided into two parts, a scientific meeting to present and discuss ideas and concepts of the use of GI in the educational context and hands-on session, where the  GI@School-group presented concepts and software for use in education (more information).

The GeospatialLearning@PrimarySchool initiative was presented during the scientific meeting part by Thomas Bartoschek. Henning Bredel presented his work in software development for OLPC´s XO-Laptop. During this part of the workshop, many interesting topics were presented by the participants; you can find all the presentations here.

The whole week was filled with inspiring discussions, development of new ideas, also for future cooperation and the exchange of ideas. The second part of the workshop was finished by a mapping party to add the area of the INPE to openstreetmap. The results can be seen here.

OLPC announces new XO-Laptop for high-school students

The OLPC foundation released a press information, which states, that they develop a new version of their XO-laptop, called XO-HS. It is designed for highschool students, so it features a faster CPU and a larger keyboard. In addition to the well known sugar environment it offers a GNOME desktop with some more productivity tools. You can find more information on this in the press release. 90.000 of the new XO-HS are to be shipped to Uruguay in the next months.

Test at St. Mauritz school in Muenster

On the 11th of June, a group of students from the ifgi  and some staff members from GL@PrimarySchool conducted another field test in a school around Muenster. The students are involved through the frame of a seminar, which is offered this semester by the GL@PrimarySchool staff. The topic of this seminar is ‚Geospatial learning with OLPC‘, in this context, the students planned and conducted some usability tests for the XO-laptops, handheld-GPS and paper maps as well. The group was as well accompanied by 2 guys that were doing some recording for our upcoming GL@PrimarySchool image movie; stay tuned for further news on this. Weiterlesen

Rwanda Outcomes

On our last day in Rwanda we met David Cavallo and Juliano Bittencourt from OLPC. They really liked our Geo Activity and the whole project approach, using Open Source data, organizing usability tests, having a didactic concept and performing learning tests. We exchanged a lot of ideas and discussed further cooperation and possibilities. Here’s our plan for the near future:

  • correcting the encountered minor usability and workflow problems (e.g. symbols)
  • providing a future plan to OLPC =>to receive 10-15 XOs for further tests in Germany
  • finalising a Geo Activity-bundle => to be deployed in Rwanda and perhaps in Uruguay
  • working on further Geo game plugins:
    • GeoGuess (like the „Schlag den Raab“ map game)
    • GeoMap (like IndieMapper OR even better as an OSM-editor)
    • Geo… let’s see 😉

Also we are interested in integrating sensor devices with the map. This connection will have a great benefit of the understanding of Geo phenomenon data which can be measured at a specific location. Also, this will offer Geo statistical approaches to examine and explore the own environment and might shape a more sensitive sense for effects and impacts on the direct environment.

Thanks to all ifgi colleagues who participated in the collecting of money for a GPS device for Theodore, our (much more than) full time translator. He was very happy receiving it today and assured us to put some effort in future OSM mappings.
